The media strikes again! Tuesday afternoon, the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Savannah held their annual Star Student/Star Teacher banquet at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center where eighteen--count 'em--18 of our top high school seniors were honored. The students, in turn, honored their Star Teachers.  We got story after story of how these dedicated folks inspired their students to be better than they thought they could be.  Just awesome!

But wait--where were the TV cameras?  I noticed I didn't have to fight my way through the media hoard to get to the luncheon, nor did I see anyone when I got inside--but kudos to the Savannah Morning News for being there.  Was something burning or bleeding elsewhere to keep television coverage away?

No coverage for our STAR STUDENTS--and the top Star Student, Jonathan Avila of Johnson High School, who had a perfect score on his SAT!  His Star Teacher was his dad! Bud Avila Sr. is no stranger to the banquet..he's been chosen Star Teacher several times and it was our first father-son award winner.  Several years ago, we had a monther-daughter winner.

Yet, time was given to this miscreant twirp in Effingham County who's been arrested again (for DUI)--and he's already been charged with vehicular homicide for killing a friend a few months ago.  So what's wrong with this picture?  Eighteen of our cream of the crop honored--and they get nothing--and a punk who has already killed someone because of his irresponsible recklessness gets his name and picture on television.  How very very sad.
